De banjospeelster met het zwoele, jazzy stemtimbre groeit op in Montreal. Tijdens haar studiejaren In West Virginia komt ze in contact met de muzikale traditie van de Appalachen. Gecombineerd met een voorliefde voor folk uit haar thuisland en de culturele bagage van een vanuit Grenada naar Canada geëmigreerde vader, reflecteert dat zich in haar songwerk waar openlijk engagement tegen verdrukking van vrouwen en etnische minderheden uit ademt. Dat wordt van bij de opener The Witch duidelijk. Het wordt samen gezongen met Aofie  O’Donaovan en daarin wordt een samenzweerderig sfeertje gecreëerd: de dames verplaatsen zich in vrouwen gebrandmerkt als heks die in de 17de eeuw in Salem Massachusetts op de brandstapel...
