Na het al zo ontzettend sterke Strictly a One-eyed Jack van vorig jaar verrast de uit Indiana afkomstige Amerikaanse singer-songwriter John Mellencamp met het zelfs nog weer betere Orpheus Descending. Wat een energie, klasse en emoties strooit hij weer onvervalst over ons neer. Sociaal bewogen heeft hij weer de ene na de andere parel voor ons vastgelegd. Onderhand ook alweer 72 jaar lijkt de muzikale creativiteit van John Mellencamp maar niet te stillen. Bekend is dat de muzikant/songschrijver bepaald niet verlegen zat om songs om zijn albums te vullen. Vaak schreef hij 2 tot 3x zoveel songs als er uiteindelijk op zijn albums kwamen.
