In de winter van ’97 concerteerde Ron Sexsmith in de AB Club, de jonge dertiger uit Ontario was destijds aangetrokken als songleverancier bij Interscope. De demo’s die hij afleverden resulteerden in een platencontract en samenwerking met Mitchel Froom en Tchad Blake, het geniale duo ondersteunde met een subtiele, uitgekiende productie en instrumentatie het markante songwerk. Secret Heart uit het titelloze album werd naast Rod Stewart en Nick Lowe door zo’n dozijn andere muzikanten gecoverd, enkele songs uit zijn volgende langspeler Other Songs vonden vrij vlug de weg naar herinterpretaties, in het latere werk wordt eveneens gretig gegraaid.
