Die coverfoto met intieme inkijk ten huize Lamar. Dubieus. Geen onverdeeld sereen familiemoment, allerminst. Dochterlief heeft hij in de armen, intussen geeft ex-vriendin Whitney Alford de pasgeboren zoon de borst op bed of wiegt en gedoornenkroonde Kendrick Lamar, die kijkt achterdochtig richting de 'sharks' buiten, naar de bedreigingen, de vijanden, met het pistool achter de broeksriem... Kendrick Lamar presteerde het al eerder, die confronterende full-openheid, over zichzelf, over zijn twijfels en onzekerheden. Was hiermee op zijn vorige platen al de fenomenale woordenkunstenaar-singersongwriter geworden die de al zolang vermaledijde hiphop in 2018, met z'n weer meesterlijke DAMN, zelfs de Pulitzerprijs voor Muziek bezorgde.
