Met de zwaar psychedelische elektrische folkrocksound van Bamnan and Slivercork levert het Texaanse Midlake in 2004 een indrukwekkend debuut af. Dit buitenbeentje op het Bella Union label raakt echter pas met het volledig in balans zijnde opvolger The Trials of Van Occupanther het hart van de muziekliefhebber, waar seventies Fleetwood Mac invloeden de sfeer bepalen en frontman Tim Smith een hoog Britpop melodieuze zang toevoegt. Een prachtplaat met gepassioneerde gedreven samenzang en licht pulserende gitaaruitvluchten.
