De immense discografie van Neil Young kan grofweg in 2 luiken worden opgesplitst, de eenzaam huilende wolf met akoestische gitaar die met countryfolk begeesterd en de potige rocker die op de grote podia het mooie weer maakt, uithalend met rauwe gitaarduels. Dat gebeurt meestal met Crazy Horse, dat sinds het einde van de jaren zestig opduikt in Youngs entourage met de onwrikbare ritmetandem opgebouwd met bassist Billy Talbot en Ralph Molina aan de drumkit. Young ontmoet het duo nog tijdens zijn Buffalo Springfield periode en engageert de muzikanten als backingband, sporadisch duiken ze ook op zijn solowerk, al dan niet met Danny Whitten en na diens dood met Frank Sampredo....
