Met het vijftien songs tellende Queens of the Summer Hotel is Aimee Mann na vierenhalf jaar eindelijk terug met een nieuw album. In eerste instantie opgezet als musical maar door Covid, en alle culturele lockdown-ellende die daar op aansloot, vervolgens als nieuw eigen album uitgebracht. Dat de beeldende songs van Aimee Mann optimaal voor film (en/of theater) werken bewees regisseur P.T. Anderson met Magnolia (1999). Manns songs bleken het verhaal van de film briljant aan te vullen, zeker niet alleen door de machtige melodielijnen maar zeker ook door de teksten. Waar Mann met haar eerste twee solo albums al bewezen had een songschrijver van uitzonderlijke klasse te zijn werd dit...
