Ruim een jaar lang verzorgde Bruce Springsteen intimistische concerten in New York, zo’n vijf avonden per week concerteerde The Boss moederziel alleen met zijn gitaar of achter de piano, sporadisch geflankeerd door zijn vrouw Patti Scialfa, in het bescheiden Walter Kerr Theatre. Nauwelijks een half jaar na het laatste concert voor de happy few ‘On Broadway’ is er een nieuw studio-album, vijf jaar na High Hopes. Op zijn negentiende studioalbum wijkt Springsteen, zonder backing van  zijn E Street Band, behoorlijk van de vertrouwde paden af. De door krakende versterkers gejaagde, rauwe gitaarriffs en massieve drumroffels zijn vervangen door aanzwellende strijkers die het in Hitch Hickin’ na een akoestische aanloop overnemen....
