Bill Callahan knutselt al sinds zijn tienerjaren aan zijn liedjes die hij aanvankelijk thuis vastlegde met cassetterecorders. Dat songwerk bracht hij bijna twintig jaar onder de schuilnaam Smog uit waarbij hij in een lo-fi benadering met elektronica en vervormde klanken experimenteert maar vaak terugvalt op een reflectieve meer intimistische benadering die de sinds zijn verhuis naar Austin, Texas in 2007 onder eigen naam uitgebrachte werkstukken kleurt. Callahans songwerk kan op appreciatie van Nick Cave en Dylan rekenen en werd door Gill Scott-Heron en Cat Power gecoverd. In 2014 huwde Bill, er kwam een zoon en vorig jaar overleed zijn moeder, ingrijpende gebeurtenissen die in twintig verhalen verwerkt worden op Shepherd...
