“We’re going backwards Armed with new technology Going backwards To a cavemen mentality” Depeche Mode is niet bepaald de meest politieke band die er is. Tenminste, in het verleden heeft de band maar mondjesmaat politieke statements gemaakt, denk aan nummers als de anti-oorlog protestsong People Are People of de zedenschets over de zakenwereld Everything Counts. Maar verder zijn het toch vooral menselijke thema’s als seks, verdriet, liefde, dood en religie die in het werk van de electropoppioniers de boventoon voeren. De slepende en broeierige single Where’s The Revolution die het nieuwe album Spirit vooraf ging, gaf al een indicatie dat Depeche Mode ditmaal wel de politiek opzoekt. Albumopener Going Backwards...
