Setting Sons vormde in 1979 het album waarmee The Jam definitief doorstootte naar de premier league van de Britse popmuziek. Na de vliegende start in 1977, een tegenvallend tweede album en de ‘redding’ via de prima, veelzijdige plaat All Mod Cons (1978) bewees het trio uit Surrey met Setting Sons een blijvertje te zijn. Een band met een eigen stijl en geluid, geworteld in punk, mod en soul. Sterker nog, het album maakte van Paul Weller een songschrijver die steeds vaker in één adem genoemd werd met illustere namen als Ray Davies en Pete Townshend.
