Het muzikale avontuur van Joe Pernice begint met Scud Mountain Boys, een akoestisch countryfolk combo uit Massachusetts dat na drie langspelers in 1998  overgaat in The Pernice Brohers. Songleverancier en frontman, Joe Pernice en zijn eveneens gitaar spelende broer zoeken en vinden een meer eclectisch georiënteerde poprock benadering. Het debuut Overcome By Happiness wordt drie jaar later opgevolgd door The World Won’t End. Ondertussen bewandelt Joe het solopad, brengt met The Pernice Brothers nog een handvol studiolangspelers uit en schrijft enkele novelles.
