Cardinals, uit Cork, heeft zich de afgelopen twee jaar flink geprofileerd. Hun 6-track ep uit 2024 vol doorleefde, ongepolijste indierock/folk deed overal de oren spitsen. Nu kunnen opkomende bands uit Ierland tegenwoordig al gauw op extra aandacht rekenen, maar Cardinals brengt gewoonweg songs die de middelmaat ruim ontstijgen; even compromisloos als pakkend. Met een geluid dat lekker eigen is. Het debuutalbum Masquerade trekt de lijn goed door, al klinkt de band wellicht wat zwaarder op de hand. De plaat is intens, de sfeer loopt uiteen van donker naar licht en van licht naar donker. Soms grimmig, cynisch en ontevreden maar vooral kwetsbaar, open en eerlijk. Masquerade staat voor het wegnemen...
