Niet te verwarren met de gelijknamige Canadese gitarist, singer-songwriter en gerenommeerde producer die in Vancouver de Black Hen Studios runt. De muzikant die hier aan bod komt is afkomstig uit San Diego en verzeilde na zijn tienerjaren in Idaho in Boston waar hij zijn vaardigheden als gitarist en songwriter  bijspijkerde in The Berklee School Of Music. In Chicago vormde hij Stump The Host met zijn toekomstige vrouw Diane Christiansen, het echtpaar zette zijn muzikale zoektocht verder met Dolly Varden. Naast enkele soloprojecten bracht Dawson met het folk jazz combo Funeral Bonsai Wedding Last Flight uit. De dood van zijn schoonouders confronteerde hem met herinneringen aan zijn lang geleden overleden moeder...
