Als de eerste helft van de jaren negentig voor Oasis waren, zoals Noel Gallagher zegt, waren de midden jaren tachtig absoluut voor The Smiths. Met vier fraaie albums en vier interessante verzamelaars brachten zij een nieuw elan binnen de Britse muziek aan dat met het fascinerende gitaarspel van Johnny Marr en de opvallende zang en teksten van zanger Morrissey grote troeven kende. De band startte in 1982 in Manchester met Marr en Morrissey, die in eerste instantie puur songs voor anderen wilden schrijven. Maar al snel bleken ze zelf de beste vertolkers van hun eigen songs te zijn. Met Marr’s jeugdvriend Andy Rourke op bas en drummer Mike Joyce werd...
