Het opvolgen van een zeer succesvol, miljoenen verkopend album is en blijft een gigantische klus en schept gigantische verwachtingen. Al helemaal als je er twee na elkaar maakt, zoals in het geval van Oasis met absolute klassiekers als Definitely Maybe (1994) en What’s the Story Morning Glory (1995). De druk die op songschrijver Noel Gallagher lag was dan ook enorm om met een derde album met net zulke sterke songs op de proppen te komen. Hun live-hoogtepunt leek de band al achter de rug te hebben met twee strak uitverkochte (onderhand legendarische) Knebworth optredens waar ruim 250.000 (!!!) fans op afkwamen.
